What is Oriental Medicine?

Oriental medicine is the oldest codified system of medicine inthe world. It restores health and balance by treating illness anddisease through the Five Major Branches of Oriental Medicine, whichinclude: acupuncture; Chinese herbal medicine; oriental nutritionand dietary therapy; tuina or oriental bodywork; as well as tai chiand qi gong.

Oriental Medicine Philosophy

Oriental Medicine relies on a highly comprehensive andindividualized diagnosis of a patient's Qi (or chi) energy. Theweakness, excess or imbalance of Qi affects key organ systems inoriental medicine and is the underlying cause of disease anddisharmony. The oriental medicine practitioner uses a broad scopeof therapies to restore balance to a patient's Qi, therebyencouraging health and healing.

Oriental Medicine Treatments

Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine Licensure

To practice as an acupuncturist or an oriental medicinepractitioner, students must pass the licensing examinationsconducted by the . Currently, 47 states plus theDistrict of Columbia require the passage of the NCCAOM examinationsor NCCAOM certification as a prerequisite for licensure.

Students must also apply for licensure in the state in whichthey plan to practice. Each state regulatory board carries uniquerequirements for licensure. Students are responsible to becomefamiliar with the state licensing requirements through their statelicensing board. Visit for moreinformation. Program Overview

Our Curriculum

You can earn your Master of Science in Oriental Medicine degreein as little as 9 trimesters. Courses are primarily offered in theevening. The 167.5-credit hour programprovides comprehensive training in the five branches of orientalmedicine. The program covers the history, theory and philosophy oforiental medicine as well as rigorous training in diagnosis andtreatment planning. Students will also graduate with a solidfoundation in the basic sciences of western medicine, havingdeveloped skills necessary for integrative and collaborativepractice in health care settings of their choosing.

Full Immersion in Traditional Arts

Our large integrative care clinic and extensive herbaldispensary ensures outstanding clinical training. The gross anatomylaboratory allows you to learn western anatomy and easternmeridian theory through hands-on dissection of a human cadaver.In the Training and Assessment Center(TAC), you'll learn, practice and be assessed on yourdiagnosis and patient interaction skills. Internships

Each student in our Master of Science in Oriental Medicineprogram serves a full-year clinical internship. In addition to learning clinicalapplications of oriental medicine and proper documentationprocedures, you will obtain important personal and business skillsyou'll need to help build your own practice. Working under thesupervision of our faculty clinicians, you will have access toprofessionals from other specialties, as well as our well-equippedtreatment rooms and fully stocked herbal dispensary.

Your clinical experience can be completed at our on-campus Whole Health Centeror at John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County.

The Stroger Hospital acupuncture and oriental medicine clerkshipfor NUHS students is one of very few hospital-based acupuncturetraining opportunities in the nation. Our interns work in anintegrative medical setting with physicians as part of amulti-specialty treatment team in the Stroger clinic for painmanagement.

Other Program Opportunities

Dual Degrees

Students who earn their MSOM degree at National University havethe option to earn a second degree (DC or ND天天色综合,天天干影视)through dual enrollment. Course scheduling for a dual degree ismade simpler because the MSOM and MSAc programs are offered in theevening and the DC and ND coursework is taught during the day.There is also similarity in some of the coursework across theprograms allowing for a reduction in the total number of hoursrequired to complete their second degree. Students are not eligibleto begin dual enrollment until the third trimester of their initialor primary program of study.

Postgraduate Programs

After graduation, students may pursue a number ofpost-professional programs such as our master's and residencyprograms. Of course, there are also a wide variety of continuing educationclasses offered which allow graduates to maintain theirprofessional licensure.
